How to Set Up UniFi VLANs and Firewall Rules with RD4U

Who This Guide Is For

If you're upgrading from a Netgear, Asus, or TP-Link router to UniFi and want to segment your network for IoT devices, guests, or business traffic, RD4U is designed for you. This guide walks you through using RD4U to set up VLANs, firewall rules, and VPN access confidently, without guesswork.

Step-by-Step Setup with RD4U

  1. Reset your UniFi Cloud Gateway
Start from a factory-reset gateway to avoid conflicts with previous settings. After you perform the reset, be sure to create a local account so that you can log in locally using a username/password (this local account is critical)
  2. Download RD4U
Get the latest version from rd4u.net and run it on a Windows machine.
  3. Walk through the 5-step wizard
Define VLANs, configure WiFi, enable VPN/DDNS, and set up firewall rules.
  4. Use Preview Mode (optional)
Verify your VLANs and firewall rules before committing any changes.
  5. Apply configuration
Once reviewed, ask the wizard to apply the config directly to your UniFi gateway.

What RD4U Does (and Doesn't Do)

  • ✓ Creates VLANs and isolates IoT, guest, and business traffic
  • ✓ Helps set up secure VPN access and DDNS
  • ✓ Visualizes firewall logic and cross-VLAN rules
  • ✗ Does not replace your UniFi controller or require installation on UniFi hardware
